clearance volume è lo spazio nocivo ovvero il volume che c'è fra il cielo del cilindro ed il pistone a fine corsa.
Credo che "additional clearance pocket" sia un "volume addizionale nocivo" che in effetti fa perdere un po' di efficienza al motore.

compression stroke, the clearance volume must be filled before the gas will reach discharge pressure and open the discharge
valve, so less gas is discharged. This also leaves extra gas at discharge pressure trapped in the clearance pocket, which has
to expand during the suction stroke and delays the opening of the suction valve.

Questi spazi/volumi (pockets) addizionali possono servire anche a regolare la portata, tanto che alcuni compressori per mezzo di questi volumi addizionali possono regolare il carico dal 100% al 75% al 50% al 25% fino a "vuoto, ovvero causare una portata nulla.
Il tutto si svolge aprendo una alla volta le 4 tasche che sono oltre il cielo del cilindro (cilindro a doppio effetto, 2 tasche per ogni fine corsa), dando così la possibilità di limitare la portata

Per i compressori alternativi si adottano invece anche ulteriori metodi di regolazione, come quelli basati sulla variazione del volume nocivo: ciò determina un peggioramento del coefficiente di riempimento e quindi della portata aspirata
