Forse sto prendendo un abbaglio colossale, ma potrebbe riferirsi al nomignolo con cui gli americani chiamavano i vietcong nella guerra in Vietnam ("se vai di pattuglia, stai attento ai Charlie")? Questi combattenti erano determinatissimi e coriacei, per cui propongo un termine che può avvicinarsi al concetto.

Io non tradurrei il nome Charlie, ma metterei una nota di traduzione in cui si fa presente che si tratta sostanzialmente di "veterani" del mestiere.
