5.3.1 Inadequate ***coupling*** methods
Poor communication between processes causes them to function in isolation. .... This causes WIP to build up between processes, which causes higher
inventory levels and slower throughput times.
Another production flow problem is that of poor control of ***coupling points***. If it is not clear what
material is kept in ***coupling points*** or how much of it there is, processes tend to do whatever they think
is right – often producing the incorrect product, or more than is needed. This in turn increases
inventory levels.

the concept of 'the next process is the customer' is emphasised. It basically means that
a previous process must produce according to the needs of the next process (the customer) . If there
is inventory between two processes, it can be seen as a ***coupling point*** or store. Keeping in mind the
concept of 'the next process is the customer', the store must be set up according to the needs of the
next process (customer).

Determine how to improve ***coupling*** between each process

**Coupling*** is a powerful way in which to reduce and control inventory throughout a production system.
There are four basic methods of ***coupling*** operations in a process. They are:
• Controlling inventory levels in storage areas
• Designing specialised pallets or carts
• Using Kanban cards
• Developing cells.
