The ability of the damper to fail-open is provided by a "dog clutch". This is a coupling (power transmission component) between the damper drive system (an electric actuator and gearbox arrangement) and the driven blade shaft. This coupling has a predetermined degree of free travel between the 2 intermeshed parts of the coupling. The amount of free travel could theoretically be set to any desired value up to about 300° (using a single intermeshing piece on each side of the coupling), but for practical purposes the free travel is typically set between 40° and 50° (and using twin intermeshing pieces), as this is the maximum amount of travel the blade would need to self-open in the event of duct overpressure.
