English term or phrase: resident doctor
Ciao a tutti,
sapete che cos'è un "resident doctor"? Qualcuno mi ha detto che in British English è la quarta delle opzioni che ho proposto, quindi in italiano mi pare sia "medico interno". Ma in American English è lo stesso?

1 - a doctor specialized in internal medicine (not a surgeon).
2 - a doctor who leaves at the hospital (does it exist a similar figure in USA)?
3 - a doctor who is doing the night shift.
4 - a newly graduate who is training at the hospital.
5 - none of the above.

agree  Giuseppe C.: A quanto pare in USA si definisce "residency" un periodo di formazione post-laurea che comprende un 1° anno di internato (internship, una sorta di nostro tirocinio) e altri 3 o più anni di specializzazione. "Intern" sarebbe quindi una puntualizzazione

essenzialmente, è un normale medico ospedaliero che in più ha l'onere della reperibilità 24/24 (una pacchia insomma! ;)))
tale è l'impegno che immagino (ancor più di quanto fanno i nostri tirocinanti) spesso dorma (risieda) direttamente, per semplicità, in ospedale

There are usually four years of residency, and the 1st year of residency is usually called "internship", but it is still part of the residency.
The a 2nd-year resident is usually called a "junior resident", while a 4th-year resident is usually called a "senior resident". The name for a 3rd-year resident usually varies depending on which residency program the physician is in.

Nono so come sia in Italia, in Svizzera un resident doctor è equivalente a un médecin interne, ossia un medico diplomato che fa i suoi 5 anni di specializzazione in strutture ospedaliere, ma ha già responsabilità piena, per ottenere poi il diritto di aprire il proprio studio/cabinet privé.

Gli intern nelle prime tre stagioni sono Meredith, Alex, Izzie, George e Cristina e non possono operare autonomamente e devono stare agli ordini del loro resident che è appunto chi li controlla e insegna loro come gestire il lavoro, in questo caso il loro resident è Miranda Bailey. Nelle prime tre stagioni Miranda Bailey,Callie Torres e Sydney Heron stanno svolgendo il loro praticantato da resident e sono al quarto anno, possono operare autonomamente ed insegnare sul campo agli intern. Nella serie in italiano viene utilizzato il termine specializzando indistintamente, mentre il termine resident si potrebbe rendere con strutturato, proprio per distinguere le due gerarchie.

Con l'avvio della quarta stagione Meredith, Cristina, Alex e Izzie diventano resident mentre George, che ha fallito l'esame finale, deve ripetere l'anno da intern con i nuovi arrivi. La Bailey e la Torres, entrate nel quinto anno di specializzazione da resident, si contendono il posto di Chief Resident (capo degli strutturati, capo tra i resident). La spunta in un primo momento Callie Torres, che assume il controllo di tutti gli strutturati (resident) di chirurgia, finchè non verrà degradata e sostituita dalla collega Miranda Bailey. Ogni strutturato deve gestire e controllare 4 nuovi intern: George è con Meredith, Lexie Grey con Christina. In seguito all'uscita di scena del cardiochirurgo Preston Burke, prenderà il suo posto la dottoressa Erica Hahn,interpretata da Brooke Smith, come nuovo attending di chirurgia cardiotoracica.
