English term or phrase: fashionably late
Il concetto è chiaro: "The refined art of being just late enough (5 minutes or so) to give the impression that you are a busy, popular person that was held up with other business."

Esiste una traduzione attestata di questa espressione in italiano? Devo tradurre e NON posso lasciare in inglese.

The phrase "fashionably late" comes from the idea that some people consider it bad form to arrive at a social event precisely at the starting time, or to be the first to arrive. So, if a party is scheduled to start at 5:00, these people consider it "fashionable" to arrive at 6:00 or 6:30. It really has nothing to do with fashion in the sense of la moda. It is really about social behavior.

I'm not sure how to translate this but I hope this gives you a sense of the meaning.

neutral  Ivana Giuliani: a mio avviso "ritardo strategico"non si adatta al contesto. Il contesto è un'espressione idiomatica cui segue una definizione e non trovo che ritardo strategico spieghi bene il concetto di fashionably late.

"chic arrivare in ritardo":
credo sia questa una delle espressioni più comuni, perlomeno che io conosca. Sta anche nel mitico "Il secondo tragico fantozzi" quando Calboni descrive Fantozzi e Filini come "...due cafoni che credono sia chic arrivare in ritardo".

Comunque se cerchi con google "chic arrivare in ritardo" e simili, trovi svariati riscontri.

Secondo me più che di "eleganza" si parla di "essere chic", "essere fighi" se uno arriva in ritardo.

Ti linko anche interessanti discussioni avvenute nel forum di wordreference, nelle varie combinazioni inglese, francese, italiano, da cui si evince che è un ritardo fatto apposta per farsi notare dagli altri (arrivati prima) e apparire, quindi, con un certo status sociale.
