Per generare la session-key, che verrà poi cifrata con RSA e la chiave pubblica del destinatario, PGP utilizza numeri pseudocasuali generati in base ad un algoritmo contenuto nell'ANSI X9.17 [1]. Gli input per questo algoritmo sono i seguenti:
il valore seme iniziale (a 64 bit)
la rappresentazione a 64 bit della data e dell'ora corrente aggiornata ad ogni generazione
una coppia di chiavi a 56 bit ognuna
Il valore seme iniziale è un numero casuale. L'algoritmo, il cui funzionamento viene illustrato nella figura 1.4, utilizza 3 applicazioni di TDes [1] (Triple DES) il cui risultato viene combinato, mediante l'or-esclusivo, con i valori presi in input per dare due valori in output:
il valore del file seme aggiornato per la prossima volta (a 64 bit)
la session key (a 64 bit)
