Come viene finanziato il bilancio dell'UE?
«Attraverso tre canali principali. Il primo è costituito dalle «risorse proprie tradizionali», generate da diritti doganali e quote sullo zucchero, ovvero dai diritti prelevati sull’importazione di prodotti dai paesi terzi e sull’esportazione di zucchero. Rappresentano circa il 12% del bilancio UE. Il secondo canale è legato all’Iva raccolta dagli Stati, e versata all’Ue. Questa voce vale l’11% delle entrate del bilancio».

VAT does NOT finance the EU, in fac it is used in many other countries that have nothing to do with the EU like Australia, Argentina, PR China etc. It was introduced in 1971 to replace IGE (imposta generale sull'entrata). The only one difference between VAT and sales tax is that VAT is applied at each passage where there is an increase in the value added of a product or service, while sales tax is exactly the same tax on value added, but it is applied all in one go at the last passage from business to final consumer.

VAT is a tax which is paid exclusively to finance the European Union (it was set-up in the 70'). As a result, sales tax is more specific and can concern different types.

Still not clear why a sales tax is applied to a service, anyway it looks like "imposta sulle vendite" is the right translation. Thanks to everybody

I never understand the Tax Man!
I looked at Laura's link and it does say IVA. So what is the difference between "imposta sulle vendite / tasse sulla vendita" and "IVA"? Do we pay IVA (VAT) + sales tax (imposta/tasse su vendita/e) on everything that is not exempt (i.e. in the UK food + children's clothes)? And then is there ANOTHER tax on top of that?
Confused on the banks of the Thames & of the Tiber. Any enlightenment gratefully received.
