Understatement è un termine della lingua inglese e indica una figura retorica che consiste nel ricorso a parole per difetto, oltre i limiti della verosimiglianza e fino alla deformazione del reale.
In lingua italiana understatement può essere tradotto con il significato di sottostima. Il termine è stato introdotto nel panorama linguistico dagli studi di linguistica cognitiva. È usato con ironia o per ridurre un effetto reale; può essere considerato l'esatto contrario della figura retorica nota come iperbole.
