English to Italian translations [PRO] Art/Literary - Linguistics / Pun - pharmacology
English term or phrase:“Isn’t ‘farm ecology’ the study of how livestock impact the environment?
I's a pun in a booklet on pharmacology:
"One pharmacologist joked that when she was asked what she did for a living, her reply prompted an unexpected question: “Isn’t ‘farm ecology’ the study of how livestock impact the environment?”
Of course, this booklet isn’t about livestock or agriculture. Rather, it’s about a field of science that studies how the body reacts to medicines and how medicines affect the body." etc......
If you notice, after the pun, the paragraph continues on the livestock and agriculture subjet, so I have to arrange both sentences.

farmacologia -- "ferm-ecologia" Ecologia ferma/fermata... insomma, si potrebbe trovare qualcosa.
farmacologia -- "far maculogia" Praticare/studiare maculogia = scienza delle machie, cf. macula = macchia (letterario, macchia; in medicina, un certo tipo di macchie sulla pelle) + il suffisso -logia.
con i rossori in volto, ammetto che sono quelli che avevo preso io!
Bisogna quindi cercare qualcosa che abbia anche finte attinenze con il farmacologo e/o il suo lavoro. Ci vuole un'idea geniale, ma questo lo sapevi già.

omigod, that's a diabolical one! can you talk to the client about 'localisation', explain there's no way 'farmacologia' could be misheard as 'ecologia agricola' (if such a thing exists) by an Italian and try and work up some kind of alternative pun yourself to propose to them?
Sorry about the lenght , but if I didn't write the complete sentence it would not be possible to understand the pun involved.

poiché qui si gioca sull'errore tra "pharmacology" e "farm ecology", che hanno una pronuncia quasi uguale in inglese, lo stesso gioco di parole è impossibile da rendere in italiano, in quanto nessuno scambierebbe la parola "farmacologa" per qualcos'altro...
forse si potrebbe lasciare "farm ecology" e aggiungere una nota per spiegare il tutto:
"ma 'farm ecology' non è forse lo studio dell'impatto del bestiame sull'ambiente?"*

Asker: Il problema è che si tratta di un testo (a metà fra l'opuscolo e il manuale) divulgativo americano sulla ricerca farmacologica, destinato al vasto pubblico. Ricorrerei a spiegazioni e NDT solo in casi estremi. Preferirei risolvere il gioco di parole, ma mi ci sto rompendo la testa. Pensavo a un gioco di parole in italiano, magari cambiando argomento, ma non mi viene in mente nulla

Asker: Come ho scritto a Nicola, il problema è che si tratta di un testo (a metà fra l'opuscolo e il manuale) divulgativo americano sulla ricerca farmacologica, destinato al vasto pubblico. Ricorrerei a spiegazioni fra parentesi e NDT solo in casi estremi. Preferirei risolvere con unaltro gioco di parole in italiano, magari cambiando argomento, ma non mi viene in mente nulla

nel genere comico, si potrebbe acentuare in modo esagereto la seconda parte : "farmECOLOGIA ... non studia l'impatto dell'allevamento sull'ambiente?" (in fondo un famoso attore italiano sfrutta la possibile confusione A/E)

Asker: La possibile confusione A/E potrebbe andare, ma FARM in inglese non possiamo lasciarlo, no? Secondo me ci vuole qualcosa che sia chiaro in italiano e che tutti possano capire senza conoscere necessariamente l'inglese
