English term or phrase: to have to do with
Greetings,

I wish to consult an Italian friend about the etymology of the word “partitura” (score), and I intend to ask her the following question:

What does the noun “partitura” have to do with the verb “partire”, if anything?

I.e. What connection does the noun “partitura” have with the verb “partire”, if any?

All the best, and many thanks,

Simon

agree  Assiolo: Partitura comes from 'partire' that means 'to separate, to divide' (not from 'partire' that means 'to leave'), because a partitura contains the parts of various instruments: violins, trompets...

partition is the key

Explanation:
Partire in Italian has 2 meanings:
1)To leave (from somewhere)
2)To divide

Partitura (also called "spartito") recalls the action of dividing, parting something (music in this case)

Hope this helps!
