veramente dalla frase non si capisce bene se si lamentavano del branco o di quello specifico individuo (che ora è carcassa) - comunque 'di cui ci lamentavamo' è altrettanto generico

non é vero. nella frase é chiaro che si lamentavano del branco di cui l'elefante morto faceva parte
lamentavamo/borbottavamo. potrebbero entrambi andare. "yammering" vuol dire lamentarsi un po' come fanno i bambini. se questo puó aiutare....

Explanation:
per interpretarlo bisogna vedere se il resto del branco l'avevano già trovato o speravano solo di trovarlo. Penso che dal tuo testo si capisca questo.
Se, come penso, era alla ricerca di questo branco e finalmente trovano una carcassa, probabilmente prima si lagnavano continuamente di non riuscire a trovarlo, magari frustrati da varie ricerche senza esito...
