mi sembra si tratti di quei pezzettini di cera da "modellare" tra i polpastrelli delle dita per adattarli all'orecchio, quindi non mi fisserei sul termine "rod" che letteralmente vuol dire barra, verga etc. tra l'altro la forma migliore per adattarli all'orecchio è quella conica, più che cilindrica.
Dal contesto puoi trovare tu la forma migliore, non credo proprio che la traduzione letterale sia vincolante!
