English to Italian translations [PRO]
Medical - Medical (general) / vaccines
English term or phrase: seed
Fujian had been identified early last year but, because the WHO could not isolate a suitable SEED in time, it was not included in the vaccines supplied to Northern Hemisphere markets this winter.

seed lot system: the starting material for the production of all microbial vaccines is the \'seed lot\', a quantity of bacteria or virus propagated in most cases from an isolate from a human infection. Some isolates have provided seed lots suitable for vaccine production in the natural state but others have required elaborate laboratory manipulation and selection. As a consequence of this, many microbial strains of abnormally low pathogenicity have been obtained and these are used for the live attenuated vaccines so much in vogue today. In the preparation of a seed lot the practice is to grow, often from a single infectious particle, a sizeable batch of seed material, the biological properties of which are first very carefully examined in the laboratory. The seed is then used to make one or more batches of vaccine which, if found satisfactory in clinical trials, validate the seed for routine production. To conserve the seed, however, it is usual to prepare from it a secondary seed and it is this, rather than the primary seed, that is used for production batches. Customarily both primary and secondary seed lots are stored in a multiplicity of small volumes as it is both inconvenient and undesirable to break into a large bulk each time seed is required.
