Explanation:
Ho trovato il termine usato sopra nel Dizionario. La maggior parte dei siti che ho visitato si riferiscono al "plug" come al "filtro". Non essendo una fumatrice e non essendo questo il mio campo di lavoro ho messo un conf. level medium.

I found a web site (mentioned below) dealing with a patent for a machine that puts plugs(filters) onto cigarettes and how it is done (higly technical but if you can skim it it makes sense). It explaines that cigarettes can have one or two plugs (two, in your case, one light and one dark). The more I read the more I am convinced that "plug" here means "filtro".
The machine reads the two different colors of the filters and detects flaws. It is possible that "plug edge" is the name used in the manufacturing process to identify the edge formed by the two colors when they are joined together. Maybe the edge(s) (that the machine reads) are not as sharp (or whatever else) as they should (may be jagged).
