English term or phrase: bump check

It seems it is just an informal way of calling another type of test. In any case, it is taken from some guidelines on inert atmosphere entry procedures (low oxygen atmospheres used for cleaning of reactors and other operations):
"6.1. The oxygen content and temperature shall be continuously monitored, and the personnel working in the vessel shall be evacuated if either of these exceeds the specified limits.
a The percent LEL (Lower Explosive Limit), H2S, and benzene content may also be monitored on a more frequent basis where significant residual hydrocarbon is present inside the reactor.
b Instruments used to test for Inert Entry are calibrated or checked (i.e. "bump check") against calibration gas standards prior to each day's use and the check is documented."

Explanation:
Ciao Francesco, se controlli internet dicono che il bump check o bump test corrisponde anche a Functional (bump) check in pratica controllo delle funzioni, come dice anche Valeria nella discussion board, all'avvio.
