English term or phrase: Moral Sympathy

"Tony Soprano's moral sympathy (or lack thereof)" ... describing Tony Soprano's incapacity to behave always morally right the author refers to the moral sympathy saying that "..sympathetic moral sentiments function to prescribe (or prohibit) certain behavior.". Come si può tradurre? Potrbbe essere solidarietà, ma non ne sono sicuro.
