English term or phrase: man oh man here's the MARSHAL
here's another one then I promise I won't bother you anymore on this subject.
It's a telltale question really... Clay Blaisedell has been hired by the citizen's committee to act as a private policeman, being given license to kill, informally. He is a Marshal. Soprintendente dello sceriffo? maresciallo?? il Professionista???

agree  giogi: aggiungo che in un contesto ironico, si potrebbe usare semplicemente "sceriffo" in Italiano per enfatizzare le presa in giro. Oddio, arriva lo sceriffo!

agree  gloriana: Di solito vuol dire maresciallo. Il mio dizionario per esempio riporta che anche nell'inglese americano si usa maresciallo (della polizia, dei vigili del fuoco). Qui però la traduzione migliore mi sembra questa.

guardia, preferibilmente, in quanto trasmette l'idea di essere fornito del porto d'armi
