English term or phrase: bastard

I'm in a play right now about an Italian-American family. The director wants us to substitute potentially offensive language with other words. I thought it would be nice if I could throw in a real Italian word (that's not too offensive) in place of "bastard" in the following phrase:

"I always thought my father was a bastard who wouldn't give me anything. Turns out he was giving me all he had."

Please give me some idea of how it is pronounced too.

Explanation:
The best translation would be "bastardo". If you really wont to bowdlerize it a bit, you can use "carogna"

"Ho sempre pensato che mio padre fosse una carogna che non mi voleva dare niente. Invece mi dava tutto quello che aveva".

Ciao,
"disgraziato" mi sembra un termine abbastanza "delicato" nel contesto. Altrimenti "bastard" può essere reso in italiano con termini ben più pesanti.....Buon lavoro!
