English term or phrase:examined rather an unexamined life
Freud, a product of the Enlightenment vision, clearly believed in the
apparently extraordinarily fortunate convergence between knowing oneself
and curing oneself. Thus, he could insist that he was not injecting his
Enlightenment Weltanschauung into his conception of treatment. Rather,
he could maintain that it happened to be objectively the case that insight
and self-knowledge are curative. However, once this claim is questioned
and the convergence between know thyself and cure thyself is no longer
taken for granted, the issue of values and Weltanschauung comes to the
fore. That is, it becomes more difficult to base one’s justification of the
traditional psychoanalytic emphasis on awareness and self-knowledge
primarily on its claims of clinical cure. Rather, the grounds for valuing
self-knowledge, knowing oneself, and leading *an examined rather an unexamined
life* become somewhat independent of their clinical efficacy.
This must be a typo or something "leading an examined rather an unexamined life" doesn't mean anything in English, it is nonsense, while if you insert a "than" it makes perfect sense in the context.

ci sono vari esempi della frase esatta 'an examined rather than en unexamined life', incluso in My Three Mothers and Other Passions' by Sophie Freud..... poi sul modo più giusto per tradurlo, passo!
Explanation: 'examined' mi senbra piu' della semplice consapevolezza qui, credo che significhi 'esaminato con intenzione di sradicare gli errori', e quindi propongo questo variante.

Explanation: Sicuramente il riferimento è a Socrate, ma in italiano trovo più riscontri con "una vita senza ricerca non è degna di essere vissuta"e "una vita senza esame" piuttosto che con "una vita non esaminata". Inoltre c'è quest'opera del filosofo R. Nozick "The examined life" tradotta con "La vita pensata". E qui http://books.google.com/books?id=KVB3q3TxxakC&pg=PA161&lpg=P... trovi quello che Nozick scrive in Socratic Puzzles a proposito della vita esaminata di Socrate.

Forse più che un legame diretto Freud-Socrate viene fuori l'analogia tra il concetto di "vita esaminata" di Socrate e quello di "autoanalisi, autoesame" di Freud.

Asker: è certamente attinente, prima si parla del "conosci te stesso" che se non ricordo male era scritto sul tempio di Delphi e Socrate ci sta benissimo!
