Long periods of silence and a nonresponsive demeanor constitutes
a particular and potentially powerful set of cues that will have different
meanings to different patients—ranging from an experience of nonintrusive
and quiet holding to an experience of sadistic *withholding*—depending
upon, among other things, the patient’s and analyst’s individual histories,
the nature of their relationship, and aspects of the analyst’s tone and general
demeanor.


Si parla dell'atteggiamento analitico e della relazione analista/paziente.
Qui ci sarebbe anche il "gioco di parole" col precedente "holding" (che, se tradotto, viene reso con "contenimento"). Però non pretendo tanto......

withhold nel senso di bloccare ciò che si ha dentro senza permettere a se stessi di farlo venire fuori? Non so se sia pienamente azzeccato in questo contesto, però si dice "blocco emozionale", "blocco espressivo"...

Visto che blocco dà idea di qualcosa di involontario, mentre withhold, soprattutto visto che aggiungono sadico, dà più idea di azione volontaria, magari si potrebbe aggiungere qualcosa tipo "autoinflitto". Un sadico blocco autoinflitto...
