Nel senso che magari il cambiamento avvenuto in precedenza è spiegabile, è riconducibile ad altre cause/altri fattori, non è del tutto "innato", diciamo così... Ti ci ritrovi?
giustificato.... magari, ma mi piacerebbe che aggiungeste una spiegazione sul significato nel contesto.... (giustificato è simile a spiegato, che a me appunto non convinceva del tutto).

Interpreto "accounted for" come "the reason why something exists or happens" (cf. MacMillan Dict.).
Mi pare ci sia un refuso nella frase: "Indeed, there is some evidence, in at least in some studies,..." (il primo "in" non dovrebbe esserci).
