Of course those who rode bikes pre-1978 weren't cyclists per se, they just rode bikes. Usually bikes of the Denver dump variety, old Schwinn, Hawthorne and BF Goodrich clunkers on their second or even third wind

Explanation:
A giudicare dal significato di "second wind" (= If you overcome tiredness and find new energy and enthusiasm, you have second wind), interpreto la frase come un simpatico gioco di parole per indicare che le bici non erano più di primo pelo, bensì erano già state "rianimate" (avevano "ripreso fiato") una o persino due volte... O è tutto frutto delle mie perversioni mentali?!
