Metto un livello 3 perché in realtà prendo ispirazione da un altro sport, il pugilato, ma direi che il significato dovrebbe essere corretto. Quando si parla di "to pull one's punches", in pugilato si intende che il pugile attacca debolmente, colpisce con pugni (volutamente) inefficaci e in realtà non colpisce l'avversario con forza.

Nel tuo caso quindi, dato che usa "wouldn't", si tratta dell'opposto: **YYY era molto/veramente bravo e attaccava con forza/decisione**

Quando si parla di "to pull one's punches", in pugilato si intende che il pugile attacca debolmente, colpisce con pugni (volutamente) inefficaci e in realtà non colpisce l'avversario con forza.
