Il termine compare in vari siti scientifici e universitari.

Ecco un esempio:
Supponiamo che due o più radiazioni elettromagnetiche interferiscano nel vuoto in opposizione di fase. Dato che esse dovrebbero annullarsi, mi chiedo: dove si trasferisce la loro energia associata?

La risposta a questa domanda vale per qualsiasi tipo di onde: radiazione elettromagnetica (in tutte le sue forme: luce, onde radio, raggi X, etc), onde di pressione (suono), funzioni d'onda di particelle (anche gli elettroni -sotto certe condizioni- danno vita a dei fenomeni di interferenza!). In linea di massima mi riferirò al suono, perché più facilmente visualizzabile, ma a parte piccoli dettagli l'argomento praticamente lo stesso anche negli altri casi.
Prima di tutto bisogna ricordare che l'interferenza distruttiva avviene quando c'è opposizione di fase, mentre quando c'è concordanza si ha interferenza costruttiva.
