"A hide has different characteristics, depending on which part of the animal it comes
from. The back and shoulders provide extra strong leather, the side provides a softer
quality. Prior to manufacture the hide is split into two layers. The outer layer is called
full-grain or nappa, the inner layer split-grain."

mi sembra di capire che la pelle "full-grain" è la pelle "pieno fiore", e "nappa" rimane nappa. Come si chiama quindi lo strato interno, lo "split-grain"? Pelle "a grana..."? Oppure?

Flavio, "crosta" è "split-grain leather".
Se vuoi dire "split-grain leather bag" è "borsa in crosta".
Che poi abbia subito un trattamento di scamosciamento, è un altro paio di maniche.

Hai ragione... cercavo di spiegare la differenza in italiano. Mi sa che ora ho risolto l'inghippo... Grain Split ( e credo quindi anche split-grain) si traduce con Spaccato da fiore. Prova a controllare su http://sc49.creation.free.fr/lexique/tannerie/tannerie.htm; è un interessante dizionario comparato :-)

Ho perso qualche passaggio?
Nappa, scamosciato, pieno fiore, crosta sono 4 cose diverse.
"Scamosciato" è suede http://dictionary.reverso.net/italian-english/scamosciato

Se leggi qui http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-suede.htm spiega che "suede" è una rifinitura superficiale ... "Although most suede is made from a split hide, it is also possible to produce suede from a full-grain piece of leather. The nappy finish can be achieved by abrading the surface of the leather, usually with an emery wheel. Suede that is manufactured from full-grain leather may also be called nubuck. Full-grain suede is usually more durable than the split-hide variety, but also more expensive."

Cara Angela, sì, chiedevo Split-grain. Ho scritto "scamosciato" perché l'ho letto nella risposta di Sede (mi sembrava OK come aggettivo). Crosta come lo uso come aggettivo? E soprattutto... allora "scamosciato" non va bene?
