Chiariamo innazitutto che le rose comunemente definite "rampicanti" o "climbers", in effetti non sono propriamente in grado di arrampicarsi da sole, in quanto non hanno nessun organo adatto ad attaccarsi. Il nome corretto è piuttosto "rose sarmentose" poiché producono lunghi rami, o sarmenti, che opportunamente guidati e sorretti possono coprire un pergolato, salire su un albero o coprire un muro.
Poche visioni riescono a raggiungere, in spettacolarità, quella di un bel rosaio sarmentoso che si alzi a rivestire il muro di una casa, o che semplicemente si stenda lungo una staccionata di legno.
