goldfish04さんが指摘されたように、装置である可能¥性もありますね。
ただしその装置に、温度やすき間風を送るなど、非常に細かい加減をほどこす必要がありますので人間の手の加わる要素が強く（英語の叙述どおりに）、装置だけともいえないと思います。
ただし、英語は純粋手作りのやりかたといいましたが、機械にもあてはまりますね。訂正します。ただしいまいったように機械に干渉する人間の度合いがかなり高いですよね。だから人間の要素のほうが強いように思われます。

| Grading comment 原文は「tobacco planters and curers」ですので技師ではなく農夫のようです。ですから「タバコ栽培者とタバコ加工熟成者」という訳にします。
