Asker: 早速のご提案ありがとうございます。この文のすぐ後に、A painter is sitting at a tableとありますので、少なくとも「突っ立って」の部分は変えなくてはなりません。原画をもう一度じっくりよく見ると、雑多な小物がテーブル上に広がっていて、言わば風景をを創っているわけですが、それに対して画家は、確かに縦方向に巨大に見えますね。その辺のところをうまく表現できればいいのかな、という気がしてきました。
Asker: 想像ですが、肖像画を描くときは大抵縦長のフォーマットで描くと思うのです。それに対して、この絵は横長ですから、そのことを風景画のフォーマットと言っているのではないかな、という気がします。今取り組んでいる本のテーマ自体が「自画像」ですから、このthe personは、やはり左に大きく描かれている画家自身（ただし若いときの）だと思います。
