英日翻訳のプルーフリーディングをしています。

ある会社の歴史を紹介するビデオのスクリプトで、"Company A joins forces with Company B"という文があり
訳文は「A社はB社と合併」となっています。

この記述が正確なのかどうかA社のホームページを調べたところ、
"we acquired a significant shareholding in B"
と書かれていました。

この場合「合併」という言葉は適切でしょうか？

確かにjoinには合併する、と言う意味があります。

しかし、"we acquired a significant shareholding in B"と書かれているのであれば、単なる合併だけではなく、買収も含まれると思います。つまり、A社がB社の株の大半を取得（買収）したことになるのではないでしょうか。

合併は間違いではありませんが、私が提案したように、買収も入れた方が良いと思います。繰り返しになりますが、それは上にも書きましたように、"we acquired a significant shareholding in B"、つまりB社の株も大量に取得し、研究施設や特許を利用できるようになるには、少なくとも半数以上の株を取得しなければ難しいと思うからです。研究施設はともかく、フランスの企業(B社）が苦労して手に入れた特許も利用できるようになるくらいですから買収に近いだけの出来事があっとと推測できます。

agree  Mami Yamaguchi: 私も先ほど「提携する」と考えていました。　間違いではないのですが、Ａ社がＢ社を買収（or 合併）したということが明らかな場合には、提携、協力の意味はふさわしくなくなります。

Asker: 回答ありがとうございます。A社はアイルランド、B社はフランスの企業です。他にも joins forces　したことによりA社はB社の研究施設や特許を利用できるようになったとありました。この場合は合併よりも買収の方が適切でしょうか？

agree  a6903239: 「大半」かどうかは不明ですが、B社株を相当数取得したことは間違いないでしょう。（質問者さんへ）詳細は有価証券報告書等でお調べになることをお勧めします。

agree  Hidetoshi Kudo: 何処の国の話かにもよると思いますが、吸収合併であれば、B社は消滅していると思います。B社が今でも存在しているのであれば、単なる買収の可能性でしょうか。

  -> コメントありがとうございます。確かに仰るように吸収合併(M&A)であれば、B社はなくなっているでしょう。ただ少なくとも提示された原文にはその旨が書かれていないので、推測ですが、買収止まりではないでしょうか。
disagree  stone-wang: 合併より「提携」と言う方がよいと思います、単なるjoinではなく、joins force withはaffiliate withと同じ意味でしょ、研究所の新英和辞典に御参考下さい。会社の規模について、B社はA社より大きいと思います。
