データ（平文）を、第三者には分かりにくい形のデータ（暗号文）に変換すること。暗号化の逆の操作は、復号化という。
データを暗号化するには、データを変換するための規則（アルゴリズム）と、鍵（キー）の2つを使う。通常、暗号化／復号化のためのアルゴリズムをデータの送信者と受信者の間で決めておき、さらにデータを暗号化／復号化するときに（毎回異なる）鍵となるデータを使ってデータを変換する。アルゴリズムと鍵の両方を使うことにより、たとえアルゴリズムが漏洩しても鍵の値が分からない限り、データを復号化することは困難となる。
