Explanation:
Re-image or re-imaging: "Your computer needs a re-image." or "I'm currently re-imaging your computer." This means your computer needs a complete makeover. Reimaging is the process we use to wipe everything off your computer and redo everything from scratch. After a computer is re-imaged, it is just like new. No viruses, no spyware, no problems. It's a beautiful thing.

使用済みのパソコンを下取りに出したり中古品として売却する場合は、パソコン内部に残っているデータなどを(完全に)消去するための初期化作業(できれば論理フォーマッティング)が不可欠となります。初期化してからOSやメインのアプリケーションを再インストールすることになりますが、この作業は中古品の販売会社が行なうのが普通です。ただし同一社内で使用者が変わる場合などは、元の使用者がメインのアプリケーションまで再インストールする規定になっている場合もあるかも知れません。

なお、OSの再インストール自体はパソコンを初期化しなくてもできますので、"re-imaging"を「再インストール」と訳すのは適切ではないと考えます。

The term "re-imaing" seems to be used in several different meanings:

"re-imaging"という用語は必ずしも同じ意味で使用されるわけではないようですが、一般的には「ハードディスクを初期化して個人情報やコンピュータウイルス等のトラブルの原因となるものを削除し、OSその他のプログラム一式を再インストールする」という意味で使用されると解釈してよろしいようです。

特にコンピュータを下取りに出したり所有権を移転したりする場合はハードディスクの初期化は欠かせない作業となります。

Rie Matsudaさんのご説明にありますようにディスクイメージを使用しての初期化、再インストールが元来の意味と考えられますが、ディスクイメージという概念が初心者にはわかりにくいせいか、"re-imaging"という用語かなりまちまちな意味で使われていますね。

結論として、訳語は「再イメージ」または「再イメージング」でOKであることがウエブ検索で確認できます。

こんにちは。

re-imageの "image" とは、ディスクイメージのことです。ビットマップファイルや、photoshopなどで扱う画像ファイルとは違うものです。

大きな会社のITなどでは、時には一日に何十台もコンピュータをセットアップしないといけないのですが、いちいちコンピュータのハードディスクをフォーマットしてパーティションを作成し、（Cドライブ、Dドライブなどと区切られていますね）、オペレーティングシステム（windows XP, vista, MacOS など）、必要なドライバやソフトウェアなどをすべてインストールして....　という作業を繰り返していられません。あるいは、会社によってはユーザーにインストール権利を与えず、使用できるソフトウェアやインストール場所、その他の権限を制限している場合もあります。それで、いろいろな設定の手間を省くために、これらのクリーンインストールが済んだ状態で（まだユーザーが使用する前に）、その「スナップショット＝ディスクイメージ」を取って保管しておきます。同じコンピュータがウィルスにやられたり、ユーザーが変わるときには、そのユーザーが使用していたドライブを掃除したり、リペアインストールなどを行わなくても、このイメージをコピーするだけで(re-image)ハードドライブはクリーンインストール状態に戻ります。（もちろん、ユーザーデータはすべて消えてしましいますが）。

このようなディスクイメージを作成してコピーするツール（ghost, diskimage）が市販されていますし、Mac にはリソースとして付いてきます。データのバックアップとは違うのですが、バックアップにも使えないことはありません。

いまやIT用語となってしまったre-image ですが、必ずしもイメージソフトを使っているかどうかはわかりません。回答者の方が出されている英語の説明が、広義の解釈だと思います。
