First of all, I wish to apologize to Ms. Uematsu for not responding directly to her question which asked for an explanation of the difference(s) in meaning between "configuration" and "settings." I simply assumed, mistakenly, that she was looking for a Japanese equivalent, something like 「観光設定」(which is usually translated in English as "preferences"), and so suggested 「設定」. I now understand that she was looking to better understand the differences between the two, and the two Japanese terms 「構成」and 「設定」 Jim Breen's WWWJDIC give "configuration" for both terms. Definitions in Apple's On-Line Dictionary/Wikipedia also equate "configuration" and "settings" in a computer context:
"Computer configuration
In communications or computer systems, a configuration is an arrangement of functional units according to their nature, number, and chief characteristics. Often, configuration pertains to the choice of hardware, software, firmware, and documentation. The configuration affects system function and performance."
Setting:
・In computers and electronics, the Computer configuration or options of the software or device
But, my sense of the two words is that "configuration" is used more to describe the "macro" (e.g., "large-scale arrangement") of parts of the computer system, both hardware and software (e.g., main body with CPU, the monitor, the printer, the keyboard, peripherals, software, firmware, etc.), including an individual PC's connectedness with a "network", whereas "settings" or "preferences" refer to the "micro arrangement" of "user options" available by ticking off boxes or turning certain software functions "on" or "off," thereby creating a particular "computing environment," hence 「環境設定」. 日本語と英語の違いを少し。
A button named "display/password configuration" can mean both a) a button to "change" the configuration or b) a button to "view" the configuration. This vagueness may be acceptable in English, but NOT in Japanese. 「ディスプレイ構成」「パスワード構成」communicates that the button is for "viewing ONLY." In other words, the translator needs to know which is intended before rendering it into Japanese.
If the button is for "changing" the configuration, then I'd suggest translating it as 「ディスプレイ構成の設定」or ディスプレイ設定 as indicated by Harold, but these two distinct source terms should not be blindly translated into a single target term.
