I'm helping some high school kids who are interested in Japanese and I would like to show them some of the differences in sentence structure. If you could translate this and tell me what each symbol represents that would be great.

トリタチガカゴノナカデエサヲタベタ（タベマシタ）。

Explanation:
Toritachiga kago nonakade esa o tabeta (tabemashita).
(The birds) (in their cages) (birdseeds) (ate).
The word order would be like the above.
"Ga" is necessary after the birds, since the phrase begins with "The", and "nonakade" means inside coming right after kago (cages), and o is followed after esa (birdseed), and last of all tabeta or tabemashita, which is more formal, meaning "ate".
