English term or phrase: split down the middle

前回の質問につづく箇所です。音楽的な表現がわからないのですが、

"It's rare to find an instrument that split down the middle and really tries to cover all bases".

What does "split down the middle" mean?

もう、これは意訳するしかないですねぇ。ストラトは音作りがしやすいのと、材質の組合せやピックアップとかアンプの組合せでも音がすごく変わるんで、どんなジャンルの音楽にも向く、っていう意味かなぁって思うんです（さすがにスラッシュメタルとかデスメタルには向きませんが）。ハードロックにもよし、ブルーズにもよし、あんまりキツイ音楽でなければなんなくこなせるギター、ってところでしょうか・・・（あんまり自信ないです。ゴメンなさい）。

Explanation:
Without the context I'd have to say it means something like "neutral", as in sounding neither sharp nor dull or maybe suited to both classical and rock music (hence the "covering all bases" part). Not my field by a long shot, so it's just a guess though.

知人のOM-42を弾かせてもらってもほぼ同じ音が出て来るということは、マーチンの現行モデルの均質性を伺わせます。（工業製品みたいだという意見もありますが）私は値段と音質、プレイアビリティのバランスが良くとれたギターだと思います。
