a samurai worrior without a master

As you said, a samurai is a historical soldier who did not have a master. Now we use the same word to call a student who didn't get accepted by a university (sometimes a senior high school). Entrance exam system being very harsh, there are many students who are forced or choose to go to a preparatory school to get into a university (of their choice) after graduating from high school. They are also called "ronin"
