この質問文の前後文脈、また原文では質問者が真面目でロマンチックに質問しているのか、それとも時には皮肉を加えてユーモラスに質問しているのかわかりませんが、plain old passion の　plain old　という表現は、必ずしも賛辞の意味で使われないと思うのです。（アメリカ人もそう言ってます。）ニュアンスとしては、ordinary and familiar (old)　に近いと言えるでしょうか。常に心中に存在し、飾りも何もない、あのお馴染みの情欲というような意味だと思います。清らかなプラトニックな情熱というよりは、性欲に近い情欲（欲情）でしょう。

まあ、これも人間の自然な心理作用であり、こういう欲情があること自体は問題ではないのですけどね。その欲情をどうするかで人間性が決まるのでは？
