ディストピア小説とは、文学におけるサブジャンルのひとつで、世相を反映して創り上げられた、絶望的な未来社会を描いた小説のことをいう。レイ・ブラッドベリの『華氏四五一』や、ジョージ・オーウェルの『一九八四』などが有名だ。これらのディストピア小説は、６０年代から７０年代にかけての科学不信と東西の冷戦構造がもととなって生まれている。そのため、現在ではまったく書かれなくなっているといっていい。　これらのディストピア小説の中で描かれる未来社会は、「暗く憂鬱な未来」ばかりだ。たとえば、全体主義で塗りつぶされた抑圧された社会（もちろんこれは、ソビエト連邦が健在の頃の、社会主義のメタファーだ）であったり、第三次世界大戦やそれに類したカタストロフ（大破壊）で国家という枠組みが崩壊した状況などがそうである。　これは、ディストピア小説の目的が、当時の世相を反映して形作られた社会構造そのものを描くことで、その時代が内包している矛盾や問題などを指摘することだからだ。そのため、物語の中心は、舞台となる「社会」を描写することに置かれている。主人公たちも世界に押しつぶされ悲劇的な最期を遂げることが多い。 - 遊びの神話
