agree  Minoru Kuwahara: i'm not sure if it's really offending to ask the term. i remember coming it across while reading certain books. i would go with both translations, but the alternative would be prefereable in a modern literature (possibly) such as Murakami.-

オナニーをする

Explanation:
This is the colloqiual term in common use. I believe the previously submitted answer is the 'textbook' form.

Also, "sex" is colloqiually referred to as エッチ or abbreviated as simply "H".

All of these usages are very common in speech and nonformal writing.

agree  Minoru Kuwahara: yes, let's face colloquialism on the street. Kawamura-san's may never be colloquial, while i happened to watch on TV a female interpreter used the word オナニー while interviewing a porn acctress from US! This could be an academic translation as well!-

しこる

Explanation:
In reference to both men and women, Mark's answer オナニー(Onnani)would work. The term マスターベーション is a term that I've seen in Japanese print. More terms are available for male masturbation. These are closer to something like 'beat off' or 'jack off':
しこる (shikoru)
千摺り(せんずり)をかく (Senzuri wo kaku)
シコシコする (shikoshiko suru)

There is also a term 自慰, (Jii) which is more like 'self-stimulation'

Hope this helps.

I went to Highschool in Japan. This topic came up too frequently among my classmates.

agree  Minoru Kuwahara: cuirous how u learned all those slangs. only from your classmates? the circumstance has certainly changed 16 years after i was at school. your suggestion reminds me of an old racy radio show. intuitively, your second would be マス as dictionary says.-
