Asker: Closing date in a real estate deal is more about when a buyer would take possession of the property. If it's a regular home purchase, I'd sign the contract on, say, Oct 1, 2009 with the closing date of Nov 1, 2009. So I sign the deal, but don't get the 'keys to the house' until Nov 1.
