VPN は Virtual Private Networkの頭字語で、仮想私設通信網・仮想プライベートネットワークのことです。

通信キャリアのバックボーンを介した、拠点間の接続サービスもあれば、
インターネットVPNといった種類のVPNもあります。

この場合は、ホテルからインターネット経由で、企業のネットワークに接続することです。インターネットですと、ネットワークの途中でデータが改ざん・傍受サれる可能性があり、企業側でも、ファイアウォールでインターネットからのアクセスを拒否しています。

そこで、VPNという技術が使用されるのですが、ホテルと企業の間に暗号化されたトンネルを作り、あたかも企業LANに接続しているかのようにするものです。
