English to Korean translations [PRO]
Marketing - Marketing / Market Research
English term or phrase: Unusually
Hi there,

I have this English sentence to be translate into Korean:

"'Unusually Uncertain' Tamping Down Economic Activity According to Fannie Mae's Economics & Mortgage Market Analysis Group"

An earlier version
'***Unusual*** Uncertainty' Tamping Down Economic Activity According to Fannie Mae's Economics & Mortgage Market Analysis Group

has been translated as follows:

경제 활동을 억누르는 ‘특이한 불확실성’: Fannie Mae의 경제 상황 & 모기지 시장
분석 그룹 주장

Does this Korean sentence need to be updated to include "Unusually" as opposed to the original "Unusual"?

극심한 or 현저한
Explanation:
This is one of the most difficult terms to be translated into Korean, even if not difficult to understand. First of all, it is a part of news article, so we had better not use terms of value judgement. I would use 현저한 (remarkable; marked) or 극심한 (extreme), following nearly idiomatic usages (see below links). I think it would be better to modify following segment as 저해하는 instead of 억누르는.
To sum up, it would be '경제 활동을 저해하는 극심한 (현저한) 불확실성'

unusually
심각한

Explanation:
The meaning is more like same in English. Thus, in Korean, the translation should remain same. But unfortunately the original Korean translation was not done correctly... "Unusual" was translated as "peculiar", which is not completely incorrect. However, it should have been translated to "very or seriously (uncertain)" rather than "peculiarly (uncertain)".

I think the translator wanted to include the nuance "strange", but "특이한" sounds quite strange in this context and rather confuses readers.

I think "seriously uncertain" is enough.

So I suggest to just replace "특이한" with "심각한".

Then, the whole translation has to be redone to include the new word "outlook".

My suggestions are:

1. Fannie Mae 경제 및 모기지시장 분석그룹에 따르면 경제 활동을 억제하는 것은 향후 경제 전망의 심각한 불확실성이다.
(According to Fannie Mae's Economics & Mortgage Market Analysis Group, what is tamping down economic activity is serious uncertainty of outlook of economy in the future.)
Fannie Mae 경제 및 모기지시장 분석그룹은 좀처럼 예측이 불가능한 불확실한 경제 상황을 경제 활동 저하의 요인으로 보고 있다.
(Fannie Mae's Economics & Mortgage Market Analysis Group sees uncertain economy that is unpredictable as a factor tamping down economic activity.)

It is not possible to know which style would fit best for your purpose without knowing the whole context.

--------------------------------------------------

"극심한" = "very serious"
"심각한" = "serious"

In this case, I think "극심한" may be better to use as my fellow translator suggested.

Just replace "심각한" with "극심한" in my suggestion 1.

unusually
이례적으로

Explanation:
Sometimes we tend to translate the "nuance" of the sentence. Although in many situations this can be an acceptable practice, in this case I would recommend using a litteral translation and let the reader get the feeling of what it actually means.

Hence, "unusually uncertain" would be "이례적으로 불확실한".
