The Lao word for cat is the same as the Thai word. In Thai it is written แมว . The Lao script is somewhat similar, but looks more fluid. A tomcat is 'meo phu'; the 'e' is pronounced as in Spanish; the 'ph' is a soft 'p', it is NOT like 'f'; the vowel 'u' rhymes with 'do' and 'you'.
