elementa. alphabetum. litterarum ordo.
The only clear phrases from the classical Roman period (about 200 B.C. to about A.D. 200) meaning "alphabet" are either ELEMENTA ("elements, components," the plural of ELEMENTUM) or LITTERARUM ORDO ("sequence of letters"). Later authors of Christian persuasion use the Greek-derived term ALPHABETUM, from "alpha" and "beta".
