Ekscimera lāzera audu noņemšanas process tiek saukts par "ablative photodecomposition" – ablatīvo (ablācija – erozija) fotosairšanu. Ir svarīgi saprast, ka ekscimera lāzers nenoņem audus kā ar skalpeli, drīzāk tas ablatīvi (iztvaicē) noņem audus no radzenes virsmas. Noņemtos audus analizējot, secināts, ka tie sastāv no dažādiem ogļūdeņražiem ar lielu molekulārsvaru. No tā varam izdarīt secinājumu, ka šie audi lāzera procedūras rezultātā ir vienkārši sadeguši.
