"Waste blood sample" gaunamas, kai kraujo mėginys imamas iš pacientui jau įvesto kateterio. "Waste blood" yra tas kraujas, kuris būna "užsistovėjęs" kateterio šlangelėje arba centrinės venos porto sistemoje. Todėl jis pirmiausia išleidžiamas, o po to jau imamas tas "tikrasis" kraujo mėginys, kuris naudojamas tyrimui.
