|20.After the obi has been brought around to the front, the obi board is sandwiched behind it.The obi is wraped around to the back, and the short end is brought down to the left over it.The two are held by an obi clip. The larger the clip the better. The waist pad is attached to the bottom of the clip. The strings are tied at the front and tucked under the obi.To tie the mandarin duck bow, first of all the short end is formed into a loop and given a few pleats. This is held temporarily by a sash that is tied in front. Now the long end is arranged the same way.Because the reverse side of a 'fukuro obi' is always plain, the wings have to be looped, rather than folded back. The right-hand wing is also pleated at the side of the clip and held by the temporary sash. The two wings completed.Next comes the body.Make a box pleat at the top as shown in the photo and drape it over the bow pad.In this step,it is important to study the pattern of the obi and work out an artistic placement of the design. The obi and the bow pad underneath it should rest securely on the clip.If the pad falls off the clip, the whole arrangement will sag.Use a thick pad.The strings cross over the wings, thus holding them in place, and are tied in front.Remove the temporary sash. The tying of the obi is now completed. As in the photo,it should be well balanced and shaped.A 'kanoko' tie-dye 'obiage' conceals the bow pad.Fasten it securely at the front.Instead of being tied, the 'obiage' is tucked over the edge of the obi, first the right side, then the left over it.A nice border is a girlishg accent and lends a fdash of color as well. The dangling end of the obi is folded under, and an 'objime' is passed over it.The 'obijime' is tied at the middle of the front. The mandarin duck bow is now finished.|
