a parking brake may be "frigjort", or " kan frigjøres" (on a Mercedes you use a pedal instead of a classic hand brake). Something that is locked can "frigjøres". It will not sound daft.
"Frigjort" should only be used when the context clearly shows that it is in past tense.
And, yes, literaly "frigjort" is liberated. And a junction box is "en koblingseske". But if you could translate each word literally, would you need a translator?

But vehicles generally don't. A service brake is a thing one activates to inhibit motion. A typical expression would be sperre, as in driftssperre. In this case, you could use 'den venstre driftssperren frigjøres' without sounding too daft.
