English term or phrase: island
I understand there are many different Norwegian words meaning the word "island". Can anyone give as many as possible with reference?
Thanks a lot.

øy
Explanation:
I am not sure where you have this from that we have many different words for the meaning of "island". As far as I can think of we generally have only one word for that and that is "øy". One island (ei øy), the island (øya). One other possibility is "ø", but not much used. One island (en ø), the island (øen).

Here is what one major Norwegian dictionary says:

island, noun

1 øy

2 (also traffic island) refuge, trafikkøy

3 (sea navigation air traffic) oppbygning (with commando tower etc.)

Words like "holme" means a small island, but basically so small that it's not inhabitable. The word "skjær" should be translated as a reef and not an island.

Anyway, I hope this helps you out a little.
