|English term or phrase: galbanum|
As far as I can see this seems to be a kind of bitter, medicinal equivalent of mastic – in fact I live in mastic country!
The Persian for ‘mastic’ is کندر رومی or, alternatively مصطکی. I had thought that galbanum was a quintessentially Iranian product, as I have said above, very much corresponding to mastic in Greece and the Aegean region of Turkey.
So I was greatly surprised when I mentioned it to some Iranian friends and acquaintances and they said they had never heard of it.
Anyway, I've found a page about it on Wikipedia:
باریجه، کما یا قسنی
I really need the most usual word for ‘galbanum’, please – is it one of the above or something yet again?
Best wishes, and many thanks,
PS Ah, yes, here we are:
It originally grew in the Mesopotamia area and was exported to India, China, Israel, and Egypt. Today Iran and Turkey are the primary sources of all Galbanum.
PPS Turkish is "kasnı", presumably cognate with قسنی.
